Bold Idea

Ensure consistent access to basic electricity for rural communities in East Africa by providing solar repair services and installing efficient and quality spare parts.

Village Energy solves the problem of lack of repairs and spare parts for owners of solar systems that is heavily restricting acquisition and use of solar systems in low income rural communities in East Africa. Utilizing phone and radio repair technicians prevalent in rural East Africa, Village Energy is building a network of solar repair shops that provide repairs and spare parts within forty-eight hours from when an owner of a solar system needs it. By doing so, Village Energy ensures consistent access to basic electricity for rural off-grid communities.

Abubaker Musuuza is the co-founder and chief executive officer of Village Energy Limited. Abu started to distribute locally assembled solar systems in 2010, but noticed many people with solar systems that had been broken for months with nowhere to get a repair service or spare parts. Abu decided to pivot Village Energy’s focus to building after-sales service infrastructure for the solar sector. Abu’s career in social entrepreneurship started at university where he volunteered as the national president of AIESEC, a leadership and entrepreneurship training program for students of higher learning across Uganda. Prior to founding Village Energy Abu worked as the East Africa Program Manager at Ashoka. Abu is a graduate of Social Work and Social Administration from Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda and is a recipient of the Ashoka Fellowship and Unreasonable Fellowship.
