Young Black Mens Success (YBS)
Program Area: Poverty Alleviation & Economic Development
Location of Impact: National
Bold Idea: Help launch black male founded microenterprises by providing full-service incubators in vacant industrial buildings in poor neighborhoods.
Why I Am Passionate About This: In 2011 alone, taxpayers shouldered more than $93 billion in direct costs and lost tax revenue to support young adults disconnected from school and employment. Young black men are approached as service recipients rather than as the architects of their own futures. After growing my own DJ business, I led community and youth-service projects and organizations in low-to-moderate income neighborhoods throughout Baltimore and Pennsylvania. I know young black men want to be productive and I seek to provide one avenue to accomplishment. Young Black Men’s Success will create microenterprise incubators in dormant industrial buildings in poor black neighborhoods. These incubators will provide training, technical assistance, and microloans to help men launch their businesses. The young men who participate in YBS will become business owners involved in the process of community revitalization.
