Last year, Echoing Green started a conversation about the role and world of women in social innovation. We discussed the recent decrease in the number of women social entrepreneurs selected by Echoing Green and five of our peer organizations, including Ashoka, Draper Richards, and Unreasonable Institute. We noted that on the investor side, the ratio of female to male investors is virtual non-existent. Also, that more men than women obtain MBAs. 2009 Echoing Green Fellow Bethany Henderson talked about the realities of juggling parenting and social entrepreneurship, and 2008 Fellow Katie Orenstein celebrated a recent increase in the number of women voices heard in the public debate.

We invite you to add your voice to the feed below, where we’ll continue to explore the opportunities to encourage and harness young women leaders to solve world biggest problems.

Women: Sit at the Table and Create the Discourse

When 2008 Echoing Green Fellow Katie Orenstein started The Op-Ed Project, some ten to fifteen percent of newspaper opinion pieces, or op-eds, were submitted by women. In the past few years, that number has increased by as much as seven percent. It’s an important indication of progress—and of ensuring that more voices are part of the public debate.

A Tale of Three Babies

Having kids and becoming a social entrepreneur were both decisions born of passion, not logic. I walked away from a high-paying “big law” job to launch City Hall Fellows, then got pregnant with my first child a few months later. (Not a combo I’d recommend.)

Forbes' Impact 30

Congrats to the thirty social entrepreneurs featured in Forbes’ Impact 30 list of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs. Echoing Green is thrilled to see six of our Fellows as well as board member Andrew Kassoy on the list of leaders in social change.

What Do You Stand To Lose?

How do you create a movement? How do you galvanize a community to come together for a common cause, especially when they are killing each other? Start with women.

Creating an Ecosystem for more Female Social Entrepreneurs

Our blogpost, Where are the Women?, caused quite a reaction! It obviously struck a nerve and raised a number of questions about gender, social change, and why it matters.
