Program Area: Poverty Alleviation & Economic Development
Location of Impact: Democratic Republic of Congo
Bold Idea: Build lasting peace by empowering Congolese women affected by genocidal conflict to reclaim their lives and transform their communities.
Why I'm Passionate About This: The best way to build peace is to help those most affected by war, but only two percent of peace-building budgets go to grassroots and women’s endeavors. While working on Conflict Mineral legislation, I saw diplomatic concessions eliminate the potential for real impact and harm the people we aimed to help. The mother of a former child solider, who started a brick-making factory with a $40 loan and now supports her family, taught me it’s her empowerment that makes peace viable. Resolve Network gives women the tools of literacy, microfinance, and collaboration to address the root cause of genocide–access to power–changing the paradigm of participation.
