Legal Peace Corps
Danny Auron
Program Area: Civil and Human Rights
Location of Impact: The Gambia
Bold Idea: Enable law schools in developing countries to educate tomorrow’s legal advocates by linking these institutions to western-trained lawyers for support in developing a sustainable curriculum in national justice.
Why I'm Passionate About This: Legal education is a way to create a society with greater respect for human dignity. I spent a year as a visiting law lecturer at the University of The Gambia, one of five full-time faculty members at the first and only law school in this developing country. My students were inspirational, studying the rule of law in the face of insufficient electricity, books, and teachers. Their dedication to justice deserves more attention and investment. By creating a stronger legal education system in developing countries, LPC empowers law students to pursue justice for their own communities.
