Program Area: Health & Healthcare
Location of Impact: India
Bold Idea: Democratize diagnostics for chronic diseases like diabetes by turning mobile phones into blood and urine analyzers.
Why We're Passionate About This: In India alone, there are nearly fifty million diabetic patients, a number that is expected to rise to eighty million by 2030. Only two out of ten diagnosed diabetes patients in India currently test blood glucose on a regular basis due to the prohibitively high cost of testing. We spent years as biomedical and electrical engineers creating devices like pacemakers, insulin pumps, and MRIs, which will only reach those with the most resources. Jana Care aims to make glucose monitoring drastically cheaper and simpler for diabetic patients in developing countries by leveraging the power of mobile devices.
