The Bold Idea:

The Community Based Environmental Project works to ensure participatory environmental planning in the low income and minority communities of Newark. Partnering with the Rutgers Environmental Law Center (RELC) and several community organizations, the Community Based Environmental Project provides education, training and support services to residents. Where necessary, the project also proves technical and legal assistance to enable residents to challenge adverse in their communities. In assisting the residents of Newark to advocate for environmental justice, the Community Based Environmental Project works to prevent harm to potential environmental injustice victims.

Biography:

Susan J. Kraham is the Director of Policy and Counsel to the President at New Jersey Audubon Society. She is responsible for the development and advancement of NJAS' policy initiatives. Her current priorities include natural resource planning, sustainable agriculture, environmental justice, urban habitat, threatened and endangered species, and funding for stewardship and maintenance of parks and open space. s. Kraham also manages NJAS' litigation and regulatory portfolio. Before joining NJAS, Ms. Kraham was a clinical professor at the Rutgers Environmental Law Clinic where she litigated environmental and land use matters in New Jersey. She holds a law degree from Columbia University and a Masters in Urban Planning from New York University. After graduating from law school, Ms. Kraham clerked for Justice Gary Stein of the New Jersey Supreme Court and was awarded the Skadden Arps Foundation Fellowship. She has also practiced in the areas of community development and civil rights law. Ms. Kraham is a board member of the Coalition for Affordable Housing and the Environment; a member of the Jewish Global Environment Network and a member of the Maplewood Township Environmental Advisory Committee.
