Experience

Sarthak has been with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) since 2006, when he started as a Program Officer in Papua New Guinea (PNG) based in the Eastern Highlands. In 2007, he assumed the role of Country Director and has been working closely with the National Department of Health in PNG to improve and expand HIV/AIDS services in the areas of laboratory systems, prevention of mother to child transmission and supply chain management. A major focus has also been to develop a rural model for HIV/AIDS testing, care, and treatment; called the "Rural Initiative", this is now the national model for decentralization of high quality HIV/AIDS services for the rural majority. From 2006 through 2010, after a successful first phase of funding from the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), Mr. Das directed efforts to renew this partnership through 2016. With a generous $25 million grant from AusAID, CHAI will continue to emphasize improving access to health services for the rural poor. In addition to his duties as Country Director, as of September 2011 Mr. Das has had an expanded role, serving as the Regional Director for Southeast Asia and Ukraine. Mr. Das has been working in HIV/AIDS and public health for seventeen years, beginning his public health career in India in 1994. Under the tutelage of Dr. Paul Farmer of Partners in Health, he worked with HIV-affected commercial sex workers and their orphaned children in Mumbai, India. Since then Mr. Das has worked on HIV/AIDS as well as other public health efforts with local and national governments throughout the United States, Cambodia, India, and Papua New Guinea. Mr. Das holds a Bachelors degree from Harvard College, Masters in Public Health from Yale School of Medicine, and will be awarded a Doctorate in Public Heath from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in May 2012.
