Personal Bio

Kirby Callam, a veteran educator and youth program leader with experience in both charter and unionized district settings, discovered his calling while serving as a volunteer mentor, coach, and program leader in Chicago’s Cabrini Green public housing community in 1990. He spent nearly a decade working for the Center for School Improvement and the Consortium on Chicago School Research at the University of Chicago, culminating with his work as a director at the university’s North Kenwood/Oakland Charter School. After six years of teaching in Evanston, Illinois, Kirby founded and led the Chicago Talent Development Charter High School on Chicago’s West Garfield Park for five years before it closed in 2014. Kirby then co-founded and now leads EvanSTEM, an in- and out-of-school ecosystem of STEM program providers collaborating to engage underrepresented youth in STEM to and through high school, college, and career. Kirby holds a BS in engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, a master of arts in teaching from National-Louis University, and a master of public and private management from Yale University School of Management. Kirby is a 1995 Echoing Green Fellow.
