bold idea

Transform maths education for students in Australia by replacing maths courses with a simple and effective cloud-based e-learning curriculum in schools and at home.

organization overview

Maths Pathway opens STEM careers to students by enabling everyone to excel in mathematics. We provide schools with an easy-to-use, cost-neutral tool to reform their approach to mathematics teaching. Rather than leaving students confused and falling behind, Maths Pathway’s online system and learning materials provide each student with a customised syllabus. Not only does this allow every student to succeed, but it also triples the learning rate. To scale this effectively, we make it exciting, easy and free for teachers to engage with the new approach, ensuring equal access for disadvantaged communities.

Personal Bio

Justin Matthys is cofounder of Maths Pathway, and is working to change the way that mathematics is taught. He grew up in a disadvantaged rural community, but graduated high school within Australia’s top 1%. At The University of Melbourne, Justin completed his Bachelor and Masters degrees in Physics, graduating 2nd in the class. A member of the group that discovered the Higgs Boson, Justin engaged in Dark Matter research. He also undertook extensive volunteer work with underprivileged families, homelessness and education both locally and in South America. To the shock of his professors, Justin joined the Teach For Australia program, becoming a full-time teacher in a disadvantaged school. As a teacher, Justin could not ignore the vast number of students he saw graduating with no understanding of mathematics. Determined to find a solution, he used technology to iteratively experiment with his own students. This solution evolved to become Maths Pathway, and in 2013 Justin committed his savings and quit his job to work full-time on the venture.
