Transform the bicycle into a vehicle for income-generation and innovation for the 500 million smallholder farmers around the world earning less than one dollar per day.
Two years ago, MIT mechanical engineer Jodie Wu returned from Tanzania frustrated that technologies weren’t reaching the people who needed them most—the smallholder farmers. Determined to do something about it, Jodie returned to Tanzania as a Baker Foundation Fellow through MIT’s Public Service Center, where she worked with students to harness their inventive talents and saw their prototype pay for itself in two weeks. Realizing its potential all over the world, Jodie founded Global Cycle Solutions, which won the Development Track and Audience Choice Awards of the MIT $100K Business Plan Competition and placed second at Tanzania’s Nane Nane Agricultural Fair in 2009. Jodie now works full-time in Tanzania, turning GCS into a reality.
