Transform summer from a barrier to a catalyst in closing the literacy gap by combining targeted instruction and parent training with incentives for student success.
Organization
With limited access to books and parents unsure how to help, elementary-aged students in low-income communities face huge reading losses over the summer. Springboard Collaborative approaches the summer as a low-cost opportunity to coach teachers in data-driven instruction, train parents as reading instructors, and incentivize K-3rd graders to make significant and lasting literacy gains.
Biography
Alejandro Gac-Artigas is a 1st grade teacher turned entrepreneur. His passion for education—ignited when his family immigrated to the U.S. seeking educational opportunity—led him to the classroom. His frustration with a system disserving his students led him to found Springboard in 2011. Alejandro holds a BA from Harvard University and an M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a Teach for America and McKinsey & Company alum, and is growing Springboard eight-fold this year.
