Program Area: Civil & Human Rights
Location of Impact: France
Bold Idea: End unjust police profiling and abuse of both youth and minorities across France through civic education, awareness campaigns, and legal action.
Why I Am So Passionate: In Paris, Blacks, Arabs, and people wearing youthful styles of clothing are up to 11 times more likely to be stopped and searched. Profiling is a reality for these populations—but a lack of data and organization has prevented a collective responsive.. I grew up in the Paris surbubs and watched as my male friends were harassed by police, convicted with rebellion, and sent to jail. France’s 2005 riots confirmed that this problem requires police reform. The Collective empowers grassroots leaders with the tools for reporting incidents and pursues legal action to stop this injustice.
