Brown Boi Project
B. Cole
Program Area: Poverty Alleviation & Economic Development
Location of Impact: National
Bold Idea: Build the self-sufficiency of young queer, straight, and transgendered people of color to shape a radical new vision of masculinity.
Why I Am Passionate About This: Man's traditional role in both the marketplace and the home are becoming obsolete. Only two of the fifteen most rapidly growing U.S. jobs are traditionally male roles, while unemployment for black males is higher than national rate. We need a radical new masculinity—one that’s rooted in honor. The black men in my life have let me borrow pieces of their masculinity to weave myself together and for that I am indebted to them. Through my last ten years as a consultant to social change organizations, combined with my academic study of black masculinity, I realized the best way to support “black bois” is to build a coalition of communities that realize their deep value. The Brown Boi Project positions all young black men—queer, transgender, and straight—and black masculine women with the leadership training, resources, and social capital to transform their lives and work for gender justice.
