Trends, topics, and tidbits this week
Our photo of the week:
Our photo from the field this week is an update from 2007 Echoing Green Fellow George Srour, Founder of Building Tomorrow, a social-profit organization that generates partnerships between U.S. based colleges and communities in sub-Saharan Africa to advance educational opportunities. Trends and topics:
Two exciting pieces of news from our Fellows this week: 2008 Echoing Green Fellows Jane Chen and Rahul Panicker, co-founders of Embrace, were featured on ABC’s 20/20 last Friday as part of a year-long series on global health issues. And Educate!, founded by 2009 Echoing Green Fellow Eric Glustrom, was invited by the Ugandan government to create a social entrepreneurship curriculum for high school students throughout the country.
Our post on the changing landscape for admissions at Harvard Business School caused quite a stir. With a new Dean, and a new outlook, the school seems to be shifting focus from those with consulting and finance backgrounds, and considering those from nonprofits, healthcare, and government much more closely. From our point of view, it’s all the more reason to work with purpose and meaning.
10 Steps for Successful Brainstorming was also quite popular and a must-keep list to have handy when exploring new ideas, or just trying to innovate on old ones. Along the same lines, a thoughtful article in the New York Times on the pursuit of the perfect brainstorm also got many of you thinking.
We also shared the December issue of the Indian edition of Inc. Magazine. While excited by the extensive coverage of social enterprise, we were perplexed by the cover page and by the reaction, so were you. As @AmyKincaid said, it made her feel “itchy.” What do you think? Is social enterprise the “good” way to get rich?
Finally our quote of the week from Bob Marley: “live the life you love. love the life you live.” Quite fitting, perhaps, as the new year, new opportunities, and new beginnings are around the corner.
Inside Echoing Green:
2,854 applications from 118 countries. Here’s how they described their ideas:
As the holidays are upon us, we wish your family and friends a joyful season full of peace and purpose! May it be restful and reenergizing…until next week!
