Week in Review 12-17-10

Trends, topics and tidbits this week

Our photo of the week:
Our photo from the field this week is an update from 2008 Echoing Green Fellows Carol Chyau and Marie So, founders of Ventures in Development (ViD), which creates social enterprises to generate economic development in Greater China. Take a look at the full gallery on Facebook.

#SocEntChat
We were thrilled to co-host the #socentchat this week with @AshokaTweets. Discussing the intersection of social entrepreneurship and government,  the chat brought people from all over the world, including Echoing Green Fellows Bethany Rubin Henderson (@BRHatCityHall), Scott Warren (@GenCitizen), and George Srour (@GSrour) who shared their own work engaging government. Enjoy the transcript and continue to share your thoughts about how social entrepreneurs should, or perhaps, should not partner with government.

Trends and topics:
Your thoughts on Seth Godin’s position that non-profits should avoid the corporate mindset if they really want to produce change caused quite a reaction on Twitter and Facebook. There was no middle road on this one—responses either wholeheartedly agreed with Seth, or argued that a little business might do nonprofits some good.

The Happiness Infographic was also quite popular. Turns out when we’re happy, we also devour more resources. When we overlay happiness, life expectancy, and carbon footprint on one map, we get this: (Greener is happier; redder is unhappier)

Happiness Infographic

We wonder how the map would change if we all worked on purpose.

The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Conflicting Advice, shared by Ashni Mohnot (@Ashni), also made quite an impression. When you’re an entrepreneur, everyone wants to give you their expert opinion; finding your voice and learning what advice to take, and when, is key.
