Our quick read on the top tweets, news, and buzz circulating in the field of changemaking this past week. Tell us, what's got you talking? And what do you want to be talking about?
- The Reynolds Program for Social Entrepreneurship at NYU put together a great list of social venture competitions and fellowships. With twenty-four pages of descriptions, eligibility requirements, and websites, this is a document you want to bookmark, print out, and then create a plan to meet the applications deadlines! http://ht.ly/aBYDo
- Would you have given Gandhi a grant? Kate Ahern, the Director of Social Innovation at Case Foundation, shares that there was a theme of being hesitant to take risk during a recent Council on Foundations conference. Even philanthropy is afraid of talking about failure. But, since it’s “innovate or become irrelevant,” Kate is hoping that foundations will find that there is nothing to be afraid of: http://ht.ly/aJfBL
- We all need mentors. But, finding them isn’t always so easy. Shellye Archambeau, the CEO of MetricStream, says that when you find someone who you admire, don’t ask them to be your mentor, just start acting like it. Cultivate the relationship, ask for advice, and then say thank you. And then go from there. http://ht.ly/aJfSC
- Perfect the art of the ask. We have to ask for things every day—for entrepreneurs, the stakes are even higher. Sometimes, with an investor, there’s only one chance to make that important ask. So, developing your skills for negotiation is a survival technique you must learn. Here are a few tips: http://ht.ly/aJgj7
- Social impact bonds continue to make the news. Omidyar Network just announced $2.1 million in grants to expand the use of the bonds in the US, Ireland, Scotland, Australia, Canada, and Israel. Their theory: social impact bonds “reduce the need for expensive emergency-response and safety-net services.” Only time will tell. http://ht.ly/aJgsx
- Social entrepreneurs from around the world gathered for the World Economic Forum on Latin America a few weeks ago. This intimate group reflected on mission drift and preventing burnout, among other issues. On scale, they acknowledged that it might be a superficial measure of success. Instead social entrepreneurs should focus more on deeper impact—effective social change comes when quantity and quality of impact are meaningful. Do you agree? http://ht.ly/aKqbn
- Just how powerful are you? Nilofer Merchant, formerly the founder and CEO of Rubicon, says that your power no longer comes from other people, your external affiliations, or your title. Rather, “...power is something that each of us manifests by knowing our purpose, applying it to what we create, and using that to define how we see ourselves in the world.” Another indication that it is more important than ever to find that purpose. We think, a must read: http://ht.ly/aKqLr
- Social impact jobs. Our monthly list of interesting opportunities, with Fellow organizations, partners, and more, around the world, and perhaps in your own backyard. It’s graduation time, so share the list with those on the job hunt! http://ht.ly/aKr6Y
- “Everyone must leave something behind when he dies….” Our question last week (and it continues this week), focuses on legacy. Think of your legacy as footprints you leave behind to create your path. It can be on different scales—from the marks you leave with your family and relationships, to your neighborhood, school, and community. So, envision your legacy in five words or less and share it with us: http://ht.ly/aKrwp
