Social Impact Jobs January 2013

Many of the informational interviews I participate in recently start something like this:

“I’d love to find a job that allows me to live abroad.”

“Where?” I ask.

“Anywhere,” some say. "East Africa," or "Cambodia," others say. “Not sure,” most say.

“For how long?” I ask.

“Not sure,” most say.

This is not a trend I felt was as prominent when I was looking for a job 15 years ago. But, it is definitely here to stay.

The allure of travel, often even taking a year off to see the world, clearly continues to pull on graduating students. But as the understanding of “work” continues to evolve, there is greater emphasis placed on flexibility, personal development, and the challenge of being outside of a comfort zone in the work place, over job security. Add to that the reality of a lingering recession and increasing student debt, and we can begin to understand why many consider working abroad as a viable possibility.

Though possible, not many truly consider how plausible this work may be. Multiple conversations have demonstrated a level of simultaneous excitement and ambiguity around international work—“It would be AMAZING to work abroad, but I still have to work out the kinks.” Prior to committing to a position, domestic or international, it is imperative to be clear of what you are getting into. Balance the openness of your desire with clarity around expectations—otherwise, you will find yourself taking a big leap into the abyss.

If you are considering working abroad, then be sure to take a look at this month’s picks for Social Impact Jobs. Amongst wonderful state-side opportunities, find highlighted opportunities abroad that have recently passed my desk.
