Social Impact Jobs
“Sure, that sounds great,” we sometimes hear when we talk about our new Work on Purpose initiative. “I mean, it would be amazing if I could actually have a career in which I could ‘do good and do well,’ but we’re in the midst of an economic crisis here. Right now, it’s just about finding a job, any job.”
We hear you. It’s been a difficult few years. But today, we have some good news: According to a recent survey by Echoing Green’s Work on Purpose partner, Idealist, nonprofit managers are optimistic and…they’re hiring!
Nearly half of the 3,000 nonprofit managers who responded to Idealist’s survey said they expected to hire for new positions in the coming year. That’s pretty incredible considering that 81 percent of these same managers reported having cut services, cut staff, or both over the past two years. (Less than ten percent expect to cut positions this year.) The survey showed that managers are particularly interested in hiring for positions doing direct service, fundraising and administrative work.
Getting a job isn’t easy. And getting one that is both right for you and good for the world can sometimes seem daunting. But take heart and know: the social change career space is growing and jobs are out there.
Right now each of the organizations below are making exciting leaps forward in their work on behalf of social change, and looking for new employees. Pivotal moments of organizational growth are known for being creative and high energy, so you may want to check these roles out.
• Juma, based in California, is making the move to New York to expand its youth development program on the East Coast. They are hiring a Communications Manager based in San Francisco.
• Peace Firs t is moving ahead with an exciting initiative launching in Spring 2012 to award a Peace First Prize – an award for youth modeled after the Nobel Peace Prize. The Executive Assistant to the President will play a crucial role in daily operations as well as supporting new programs.
