Satiated by the Feast Social Innovation Conference
Yesterday, three Echoing Green staffers took part in The Feast, an all-day social innovation conference. Despite a severe initial shortage of fair-trade coffee, the day kicked off with high energy presentations from Dickson Despommier of The Vertical Farm Project, Tom Szaky of Terracyle, and Joshua Onysko of Pangea Organics.
And that was just before 11 am.
The rest of the day was filled with eight additional presentations, snacking on delicious organic food, and meeting the amazing attendees. The theme of the day seemed to be mixing high-minded creativity with high-impact action, and that was certainly reflected in the spirit and work of the people we met. It was an incredible forum for sharing interests, setting the stage for collaboration, and expanding possibilities for world-changing ideas.
We were also treated to several video interludes (all of which are available online). Watch below for some inspiration, and if you look carefully, you'll see the work of several Echoing Green Fellows including The Global Fund for Children and African Leadership Academy.
Thanks to Jerri Chou and Michael Karnjanaprakorn of All Day Buffet for organizing such a great event. We're already looking forward to next year; this was the kind of feast that definitely whets the appetite for more!

Terracycle
I think Terracycle is one of the most innovative companies to ever be created. It was started on the concept of using what everyone else throws away or considers garbage to create a viable product that arguably works better than conventional competitors in the same space. Excellent work Tom!

Girl Effect
I loved the Girl Effect - it is certainly true that women, especially in developing countries, need the means to independence and opportunity. The fact is that women outnumber men on this planet, and the idea that somehow men should automatically hold dominance isn't exactly the brightest idea. That's one of the reasons why I really have always admired the Grameen Bank, especially since a good deal of the microcredit loans they make available are to women for precisely those kinds of purposes - like buying a cow to produce milk, or a sewing machine to manufacture garments, the means to industry (even at the cottage or village level) and therefore the means to independence. The thing about poverty is that combating world poverty is not best achieved by giving massive loans to governments, that they never pay back to the IMF or World Bank, and then the corrupt dictators in all but name usually abscond with the funding, which is one of the reasons why I'm not overtly impressed with Bono - "Give a person a fish, they're fed for a day. Teach them to fish, they're fed for life." Making more fishing poles available is far superior to handing fish out, metaphorically speaking.
