Maya Ajmera Receives 2008 Women of Distinction Award
Congratulations to Maya Ajmera on being a recipient of the Women of Distinction Award at this year’s National Conference for College Women Student Leaders! The award recognizes women who are “leaders in their fields, innovators of unique programs and services, and prime examples of lifelong commitments to promoting equity for women and girls everywhere.” Maya, a 1993 Echoing Green Fellow, was recognized for her work with the Global Fund for Children. She began the organization in order to advance the dignity of vulnerable youth around the world by providing them with educational materials that foster an appreciation for diversity and an understanding of their responsibilities as global citizens. The nonprofit assists community-based organizations worldwide by offering books, some of which have been written by Maya herself, and financial support in the form of grants. This year Maya will serve as one of the award’s five recipients, alongside such inspirational leaders as Majora Carter and Kimberly Dozier.
