Launching Work on Purpose
I want a meaningful career—not just a job. But how do I get there?
You’ve probably been hearing that a growing number of millennials joining the workforce are motivated to use their careers as a vehicle to change our world. Yet, many don’t know how or where to start. Does this resonate with you? Does it remind you of your own path?
In the five years we have been researching this very topic, we heard and saw firsthand how few resources and compelling frameworks exist to help guide the largest generation in history—over 1 billion strong—to develop life-career paths with purpose.
So we wanted to do something about it.
Set to be published by Echoing Green in April 2011, Work on Purpose tells the stories of five changemakers and their journeys from struggle and uncertainty to significance and triumph. You may be surprised to learn that their journeys were not a straight path to success. In fact, one of the most illuminating chapters is called "Life Out of Whack."
Through these true-life narratives, Work on Purpose offers a simple—yet powerful—framework: heart + head = hustle. In other words, personal fulfillment and societal impact are the result of aligning passion and talents.
So, why is Echoing Green publishing a book about changemakers, in general, not just social entrepreneurs?
We’ve done it because creating an ecosystem of individuals dedicated to pushing forward bold ideas to solve the world’s biggest problems is core to our mission. While change often starts with one person, no one can do it alone. Our world needs to inspire and support young people to maximize their roles as key players in social movements. Our hope is that Work on Purpose will harness your spirit and that of the millions of young people who are in the beginning stages of crafting careers with meaningful impact.
Also included in the book are 150 career resources and programs, thought-provoking questions to inspire readers to apply the lessons in the book to their own lives; and an accompanying activity guide for professors and facilitators.
A special thanks to Lance Armstrong and Doug Ulman for graciously writing a foreword for the book, and to Geoffrey Canada for his exciting afterword.
You can be one of the first to preview the book by joining Echoing Green's email list. We look forward to hearing your thoughts and reactions to Work on Purpose.
