Launching the Echoing Green Book Club

We’re kicking off the New Year with a deep-dive into career, inspiration, and finding meaning and purpose in our lives. As we explore what this looks like—and it will be different for each of us— we will be seeking out and sharing stories about people who are tenacious, persistent, and finding sheer joy and fulfillment in what they do. To help us do just that, we’re launching the Echoing Green Book Club!
This month, we will be reading The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. The book chronicles the journey of William’s life as a young boy in Malawi and his fascination with windmills. In a country where magic is reality, William was drawn to science, technology, and tinkering. He imagined bringing electricity and running water to his village, a daunting task since only 2% of Malawians enjoy such a luxury. With discarded textbooks, scrap metal, old tractor parts, and some pretty hefty determination, he does just that.

So, go grab the book from your local bookstore, or download it onto your online device, start your reading, and save the date!

William is a former student of the Echoing Green supported African Leadership Academy, a pan-African high school in South Africa, and a 2007 TED Global Fellow. He was also invited to share his story at the 2008 World Economic Forum on Africa. We hope that William’s story will stir your minds and get your juices flowing about your own journey this year.
