Katie Orenstein In The News
Katie Orenstein, 2008 Echoing Green Fellow and founder of The Op-Ed Project, has been taking the media by storm recently!
Last week, CBC Radio in Montreal interviewed Katie about her work and the origins of her organization. When asked about how she got the idea for The Op-Ed Project, she discussed the debate regarding the lack of women in the media. She noted that there were mainly two points of view: people either saw this as a problem caused by institutionalized sexism, or they blamed it on the idea that women are socialized differently and thus, they naturally shy away from public forums and stating their opinions. However, Katie saw a more “solvable and obvious part of the problem,” in that women do not submit opinion articles with the same frequency as men. For example, 9 out of 10 submissions to the Washington Post’s opinion page last year were from men. Katie discusses how The Op-Ed Project is hoping to reverse this trend and get women involved in all forms of media.
In addition to this interview, Katie and The Op-Ed Project have been featured in the Stanford Report, The Ottawa Citizen, BBC Radio and at McGill University. Great work, Katie!
