The Juice Project Recognized by First Lady Michelle Obama
A cancelled flight, 94 degree weather, and painful shoes did not stop 2009 Echoing Green Fellows angie beatty and shawn mckie from making an appearance at the White House.
On May 22nd, angie and shawn, founders of The Juice Project received an invitation and nod from First Lady Michelle Obama for being one of the most innovative early-stage social enterprises in the nation. The Juice Project combats disease mortality in inner cities by reimagining the corner store as a one-stop shop for nutritious yet affordable food, free exercise training/activities, media/health literacy education, and art programs.
In addition to giving credit to The Juice Project, Michelle Obama discussed the importance of supporting the expansion and growth of similar local programs. The Social Innovation Fund is putting $50 million to replicating successful initiatives that tackle domestic societal challenges like obesity and poverty.
Kudos to angie and shawn for braving the heat, and special kudos to angie for braving her peep-toe pumps.
