Clive Stafford Smith Feature in The New York Times
Today’s New York Times featured a front page article on the release of Binyam Mohamed, a long-time Guantanamo detainee. Mohamed is a British resident who has spent the past seven years in American custody. He was released today in London after all charges against him were dismissed. His attorney is 2005 Echoing Green Fellow, Clive Stafford Smith.
According to the article:
The case has been viewed by some as a test for President Obama and his promise to break sharply from his predecessor regarding the treatment of detainees. Continued detention of a prisoner with no charges against him, whose release was sought by the United States’ closest ally in the war on terror, loomed as a potential embarrassment for the new administration.
