Clive Stafford Smith Accused of Smuggling Undies in the New Yorker
2005 Echoing Green Fellow Clive Stafford Smith was recently featured in the New Yorker, regarding a questionable accusation that he and another attorney smuggled underwear into Guantanamo Bay for their clients. Clive denied any accusations regarding the contraband briefs, and believes a sympathetic guard is the culprit.
“A rangy, quick-witted man with a quizzical air, Stafford Smith scoffed at the suggestion that serious times demand self-seriousness. “If you take everything that the government does in earnest,” he said, “you’ll slit your wrists. When you’re dealing with an absurd system, you’ve got to point out the absurdities.”
