Can Chris Myers Asch Make Government Service Cool?
Last week, the New York Times ran an amazing story on 2007 Echoing Green Fellow Chris Myers Asch, founder of the Public Service Academy. It seems that not only the mainstream media, but the Washington establishment are beginning to follow Chris’s lead: as of this writing, the legislation to create the Public Service Academy has 23 Senate sponsors and 123 House sponsors.
Chris is clearly aware of the possibilities for the Public Service Academy in this heady national moment. He told the Times reporter: ““The Public Service Academy can be Barack Obama’s Peace Corps…He needs to take advantage of this moment when people are recognizing the importance of government and build institutions that will last.”
Chris has also been pulling out all the stops to get the First Family behind his idea. Not only has he cornered the President-Elect at two fundraisers, but he gave Michelle Obama his pitch using a strategic baby-holding technique to get her attention. Now that’s bold!
The article is definitely worth a closer read. If you’re interested in learning more or helping out, check out PSA’s website.
