Here's our quick read on the top tweets, news, and buzz circulating in the field of social entrepreneurship and changemaking this week. What's got you talking?
- This week, The New York Times said that millenials are choosing more service oriented careers because the recession is not giving them any other choice. We respectfully disagree. Making a difference is not an accidental career path. Rather, we think the recession gives recent graduates the profound opportunity to explore what a career with purpose might look like for them, which doesn’t necessarily mean shifting sectors. It seems a lot of you agree. http://ht.ly/48TLL
- In a Harvard Business Review post last summer, Dan Palotta called entrepreneurs misfits. But, it’s ok, embrace it—you’re asking the impossible questions. You make yourselves vulnerable to criticism, ridicule, and laughter. With this vulnerability, however, also comes a great deal of love. http://ht.ly/46UjP
- The information we hear and read comes from a very narrow selection of society—one that is mostly privileged, mostly Western, mostly white, and mostly male. As a person with brainpower and ideas, you have a social obligation to contribute to the world, to make your voice heard. Echoing Green Fellow and founder of The OpEd Project, Katie Orenstein argues that this isn’t just important for women, it’s important for everyone. http://ht.ly/47kVr
- We can’t all start our own organizations. So, how do we promote more innovation and intrapreneurship? Encourage risk and don’t punish failure. Give people the space to experiment and the resources to succeed. http://ht.ly/48U2X
- The 2011 Semifinalists for the Dell Social Innovation competition were announced this week! Congratulations to all who have made it this far, including Echoing Green supported EGG-energy. Have a look at the projects and send your best wishes: http://ht.ly/48V3T
- The Harvard Social Entrepreneurship Conference was held this weekend, with such luminaries as Willy Foote of Root Capital, and excellent coverage by many, including @NextBillion. Catch up on the livestream of tweets here: http://ht.ly/48UVd
