When 2008 Echoing Green Fellow Katie Orenstein started The Op-Ed Project, only four percent of the submissions to the op-ed pages of The Wall Street Journal were from women. Now, ten percent come from them. It’s an important indication of progress—and of ensuring that more voices are part of the public debate.

A Voice for Those Without One

2009 Echoing Green Fellow Esra'a Al Shafei launched Mideast Youth which uses social web tools to connect youth from the Middle East and North Africa online to promote human rights, religious freedom, tolerance, and free speech.

Drones for Human Rights

Mark Hanis, 2006 Echoing Green Fellow and founder of the Genocide Intervention Network, has co-written an op-ed in the New York Times that asks if drone or UAV surveillance could help document state repression in Syria. He writes:
