Our 2008 New Fellows Conference - Top Five Funniest Stories

This past weekend, our newest class of fellows gathered on Duke University’s campus in Durham, NC for four days of intense training, workshops, and one-on-one consulting. But, we recognize that it's often the moments in-between the formal learning that provide the biggest take aways. And, we believe it is the moments when you are laughing (or perhaps even crying) that are the most memorable.

With that in mind, we'd thought we would focus on the funniest moments:

1) Cheryl Dorsey, Echoing Green's President and a constant champion of the underdog, orchestrated a farmyard distraction that enabled us to feed the runt of a litter of pigs. at the amazing retreat center Stone House.

2) A late night Foosball tournament in the dorm. Who ever said social change leaders are not competitive?

3) When a random car stalled in downtown Durham, the group tried to help push it out of an intersection. Unfortunately, our posse of social entrepreneurs was no match for this particular seized transmission.

4) During “fellow only” time, the new fellows were sequestered for some private time away from staff and other distractions. They liked it so much they wouldn’t let anyone back into the room.

5) One particular fellow who will remain nameless was a particularly good match for Durham's famous mechanical bull, much to chagrin of the bull operator who tried every trick in the bag. I think the secret is strong ab muscles and literally going with the flow.

Of course, there were also amazing volunteers, brilliant presentations, new connections, inspiration, and tasty food.   Thanks to everyone who made this conference a success!
