Program Area: Poverty Alleviation & Economic Development
Location of Impact: India
Bold Idea: Develop affordable, appropriate health technologies produced by women for women in rural India.
Why I'm Passionate About This: One million mothers die annually from unsanitary childbirth conditions. Growing up in India, I saw my mother and my young friends who became mothers struggle with financial hardships and poor health. After marriage, I experienced unsanitary birthing conditions myself and contracted an infection that caused me years of suffering. For my work, I handled products aimed at reducing the drudgery of women, from inception to field testing, and sought to bring women new technologies. AYZH increases the income and health of women in rural India by enabling them to be the producers of tools like sterile birth kits, designed to help women thrive.
