Mailande began her career in the art world; after various experiences in the field in college, ranging from museum education to art therapy at the Duke Children's Hospital, she worked for nearly two years in commercial galleries in New York. While working in marketing and development at various New York public arts nonprofits, she developed a strong interest in social entrepreneurship that ultimately led to her current position at Echoing Green. Mailande provides grantwriting and fundraising support to EFA (Education Fights AIDS) International, which supports African youth infected and/or affected by HIV/AIDS . She also advocates for rape and domestic violence survivors at Beth Israel Medical Center. Mailande graduated summa cum laude from Duke University in 2006 and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Why do you do what you do?

I believe that we live in a really exciting, pivotal moment. On a constantly expanding scale, people are realizing that they really are connected to everyone around them, and that their actions can and do affect their communities and society at large. That sense of connection is crucial, and it can be leveraged in a meaningful way to effect change. I want to be part of the catalyst for that spark: the realization that the elements of your life, from the smallest interactions to the overarching goals, really can reflect – and bring about – the change you want to see.

What drew you to work at Echoing Green?

I felt a strong pull to seek a career that was both intellectually challenging and grounded in service and new ideas. This work gave me a new approach to the ongoing challenge of aligning what I do with who I am.

What book are you currently reading?

Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris; The Power of Unreasonable People by John Elkington and Pamela Hartigan

What do you do for fun in your free time?

I like wandering around the city, running, bikram yoga, singing all the time, dancing whenever possible, and trying (mostly in vain) to keep up with the New York art world.

When was your last Be Bold moment?

I made a commitment to run a 5K - kind of a big deal for me, as I love to run but am not particularly good at it yet.

In the next month, I plan to…

Spend as much time outside as possible, preferably lying around in various parks. And kickstart re-learning French.
