Nirav Shroff - Social Investment Council Profile

Tell us about yourself! Where are you from and what do you do for a living?
My name is Nirav Shroff, and I’m originally from Houston, Texas. I am currently in the midst of a year-long fellowship with Dasra. Dasra is India’s first venture philanthropy firm and provides both funding and management expertise to social enterprises across India.
How has your experience on the Social Investment Council informed your work at Dasra?
Echoing Green provided me with a great introduction into the world of social investing. Listening to Lara’s and Cheryl’s views, meeting several Fellows and studying Echoing Green’s “portfolio” made me realize that you can not only embed business practices within the social sector, but it is actually necessary to do so.
I found it easier to transition to Dasra from Wall Street due to the exposure I received from Echoing Green. I was nervous about distancing myself from the Social Investment Council when moving to India, but I have been lucky enough to work closely with two India-based fellows during my time here.
What advice would you give to young professionals who are interested in both business and social change?
First and foremost, opportunities are plentiful. Socially-focused organizations are constantly looking for young professionals who can reflect on their business experiences to strengthen organizational practices, operations and strategy. Additionally, it’s important to have a clear idea of which areas/countries you are interested in and what you hope to get out of your experience. Working at a social investment fund/grant making agency as opposed to on-site with a social enterprise are two completely different experiences that are rewarding in very different ways.
What area in social change are you most passionate about?
Livelihood. I enjoy working with social entrepreneurs who promote the social and economic well-being of those who reside at the bottom of the pyramid. Though it may take an entire generation to truly witness social change, I have found livelihood- focused enterprises to not only tackle the root of social problems but also create lasting, innovative solutions. Successful livelihood-focused enterprises position beneficiaries to provide their families with healthcare, education and other essential needs so they can eventually lift their families out of poverty.
Who do you look up to, and why?
My father - I could not have asked for a better role model. Even today, I continue to learn from the resilience he developed as a young immigrant, his “family first” attitude and his honest devotion towards his career.
If you had to listen to one song on repeat for 24 hours, what would it be?
NYC by Interpol.
